Last Friday saw the Barleyfield in Barcroft buzzing with laughter with the annual family fun day organised by Barcroft Community Association attracting hundreds of local families who enjoyed a wide range of activities including a variety of inflatables, go-karts, face painting, a barbeque and open-air disco.

Darren Thompson, Chairperson of Barcroft Community Association commented “The Family Fun Day marked the end of another successful community summer scheme that included day trips to Dublin Zoo and Exploris, arts & crafts, a green gym project, tennis, kite-making, a visit from the Teddy Bear Factory, and other activities. Hundreds of children, parents and grandparents have participated in events in recent weeks at the community centre and the adjoining grounds.

“Our committee members give up hundreds of hours of their own time throughout the year to manage the community centre and organise seasonal events.  In between these activities our volunteers represent the interests of residents through the Newry Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership, Supporting Communities NI Inter-Agency meetings, Community Safety initiatives along with regular engagements with the Council, Education Authority, Housing Executive, Southern Health and Social Services Trust, Southern Regional College, Conservation Volunteers NI, the Confederation of Community Groups, etc. Without this round the clock work the summer programme would not happen.

Mr Thompson concluded “We are very proud residents, this area means so much to our families, neighbours and friends. It was great to see everyone enjoying the Fun Day and it is encouraging that so many Polish families took part in the Barleyfield event. Like scores of other residents, I have been born and raised in Barcroft and I am proud of my roots. The Fun Day coupled with all our other activities highlights the very positive work of our dedicated community activists”.
