Confirmation that Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is committed to delivering a 15 Acre Park at the Albert Basin in Newry came at this evenings (Monday) December council meeting in Downpatrick.

The motion had been agreed at the Strategy Policy and Resources Committee meeting on 16 November and all that was necessary tonight was for the full council to adopt the committee minutes which they duly did, albiet after a lengthy heated discussion on the councils Irish Language Bursary scheme, another item in the meetings minutes.

Members of the Newry 2020 group who have been campaigning for four years for a world class park for Newry were on hand in  he public gallery  for the historic occasion.

It follows many twists and turns along the way since the original morion brought by Councillors Patrick Brown, Gary Stokes, Jarlath Tinnelly and David Taylor came before the council in October.

What happens next is the setting up of a task and finish group in the next three months who will establish plans to move the project forward and investigate funding options. The group will consist of councillors and community representatives and a dedicated council officer.
