A Night for Sam

A great night was had by all at the club on Saturday at A Night for Sam. The clubhouse was packed to rafters as the community came together to raise funds for the Mathers family at a difficult time. Sam Mathers, who is the wife of our club member, committee member and team mentor Bob and mother of our underage footballer Tristan, is a great friend of the club and is currently battling against illness.

The club would like to extend its sincere thanks to everyone who weighed in behind the event and helped out in any way to make it such a successful night in such a short space of time – all those who donated auction and raffle prizes, the brilliant Street Legal band, the sound and lighting guys, the marquee provider, the cool van supplier, the evergreen MC Pat McGinn, all the bar staff, the waiters, the bottle and glass collectors, the ticket sellers, burger makers, all the stewards, NM&D District Council, all the Shane’s committee members and anyone else who helped out in any way.

We would ask everyone to continue to keep Sam, Bob, Tristan and their entire family circle in their thoughts and prayers.

Senior Men

A disappointing performance from our senior men saw them fall to a two-point defeat away to Whitecross on Friday evening, 1 – 10 to 0 – 11.

Whitecross opened the scoring early on but a free from Paul O’Rourke and two long range efforts from Ciaran Mackin put the Shane’s ahead. The sides then swapped frees, with Paul O’Rourke again on target for away side, to keep two between the sides but Whitecross edged ahead soon after when a high ball caused confusion in the Shane’s defence and the home side bundled the ball to the net to lead by one. A Kristian Magill point tied the game soon after before another pointed Paul O’Rourke free edged the Shane’s ahead again but two late first-half Whitecross points, one from a placed ball, saw them lead by one at the break, 1 – 4 to 0 – 6.

Half-time substitute Mark McCabe brought the sides level again in the opening minutes of the second period before Matthew Girvan slotted over from close range to put the Shane’s back in front only for Whitecross to equalise minutes later with a pointed free.  Another long-range score from Ciaran Mackin restored the Shane’s narrow advantage, with Paul O’Rourke firing his fourth point of the game to give the Shane’s a two-point lead. However, Whitecross then hit four points on the bounce to lead by two going into the closing stages but their advantage was reduced to just the minimum when the impressive O’Rourke tapped over another free. The Shane’s battled hard to get back on level terms but their efforts were in vain as Whitecross converted an injury-time free to claim the win by two, 1 -10 to 0 – 11.

Senior Ladies

Our senior ladies are at home to Crossmaglen on Monday night at 7.30pm and with both teams currently unbeaten in the league it promises to be a tight game.

U16 Girls

Our U16 girls played out a thoroughly entertaining one-point win over Carrickcruppen last Monday night. It was a great game of football with both sides going out all for the but it was the Shane’s girl who claimed the win on a score-line of 4 – 12 to 6 – 5.

U14.5 Boys

Our U14.5 boys’ amalgamation of Patrick Rankins continued their impressive run of form with great win over Loughilly Gaels in the Division 2 Championship on Friday evening. In what was a very physical game the young Rankins played some good football to claim the win on a score-line of 5 – 8 to 2 – 11 and see themselves through to the quarter-final of the competition. Overall it was a decent performance, particularly considering a number of regulars were still in Barcelona after their flight home was delayed by a couple of days. Thankfully the stranded lads managed to endure an extra two nights in a 4-star hotel with several swimming pools. Luckily, they are all now back on home soil and into the next round of the Championship also.

U12s

Our U12s were in action on Saturday against Keady and despite having a depleted squad due to Confirmation, Communion and illness there was some great football on show in two very competitive games. Training for the continues as normal this week.

U8s & U6s

Well done to all our U8 and U6 footballers who made the short journey to Correnshigo last Thursday night for a couple of challenge games. All the boys and girls on both teams played some brilliant football and we would like to thank Correnshigo for the invite and hospitality. Training for our U8s continues every Wednesday and Friday evening at the field from 6.30pm – 7.30pm.

Well Done

Well done to Caoimhe Feehan, Rachel McCabe and Abbie McVerry who were all part of the Armagh U14 girls’ squad who have qualified for the All-Ireland quarter-finals following the completion of the group stages of the competition on Saturday.

Mud Run and Rainbow Run

Sunday 16th June sees the club members and others taking part in a Mud Run. A Rainbow Run will take place later in the evening.
The Mud Run will take place in Castlewellan at 12.30pm and anyone wanting to take part can get sponsor forms for the event from Terence Feehan.
The Rainbow Run will take place at our club grounds on the same day at 4.00pm and will act as a fundraiser for our underage teams. Anyone wanting to take part in the Rainbow Run can get sponsor cards from Yasmin Mackin.
After the Rainbow Run there will be a BBQ at the club and the bar will be open for refreshments. Everyone is in encouraged to get involved in either of the events, the Mud Run or the Rainbow Run - it will be a great day’s craic all round.

Cúl Camp

This year’s Kellogg’s Cúl Camp will take place at the club from Monday 15th July - Friday 19th July. Online registration for the camp is now open and anyone planning to attend should register online asap using the following link – www.kelloggsculcamps.gaa.ie
