Glórtha gCuilinn Singers Circle Childrens' session

7.30pm Ceol na Croise -Léacht le Dr. Gearóid Trimble – The Gaelic Singers of Crossmaglen – Their lives and their songs with Dr. Gearóid Trimble - Bilingual Event.

Amhránaithe Chrois Mhic Lionnáin, a saolta agus a n-amhráin.

By early 20th century, Southeast Ulster had become the last surviving Gaeltacht region of the eastern seaboard with many families of native Irish speakers still scattered throughout this rural landscape, including the greater Crossmaglen district whose Irish speaking inhabitants would also become one of the most important and prolific sources for this area’s rich oral song tradition that has survived for over 400 years. With original transcripts, recordings and contributions from local singers throughout, this talk will bring the audience back to a Crossmaglen of over one hundred years ago where its local Gaelic singers provided unique songs and renditions that told the story of their own locality and people in their native tongue.

Speaker biog: A native of Crossmaglen, Gearóid Trimbke is a PhD graduate of Ulster University and has written extensively on literary aspects of the Irish language. With a particular focus on the Gaelic heritage of Southeast Ulster, his published works include: ‘Glór Gaeilge Oirdheisceart Uladh’, ‘Poets, Minor Poets and Poetasters in Oirialla’, ‘John Hannon – A Forgotten Gaelic Scholar from Crossmaglen’ and ‘Raghnall Dall Mac Domhnaill – Creggan’s Other Great Gaelic Poet’
