Gerry O' Connor The Rose In The Gap - Dance Music of Oriel From The Donnellan Collection

For it’s final concert of 2019 Iúr Cinn Fleadh is hosting a very special concert and lecture from acclaimed fiddle player, Gerry O’Connor. 

The concert takes place on Sunday 8 September at 7.30pm (Doors 7pm) in the Sean Hollywood Arts Centre, Newry, Admission £12.50.

Gerry from Ravensdale, Dundalk will present the concert based on a recent publication of traditional Instrumental music from the South East Ulster area “The Rose in the Gap” 

Gerry O’Connor has played and recorded with Lá Lúgh (Eithne Ní Uallacháin, Sony Music) and Skylark (Len Graham, Gary O’Briain & Máirtín O’Connor), recording four CDs on the Claddagh label. He has toured and recorded with members of all the legendary traditional music ensembles, including Planxty, Bothy Band, De Danann, Boys of the Lough and The Chieftains. 

A winner of many awards most recently he took the Bardic Award from Comhaltas Ceoltoirí Eireann for significant contribution to the promotion of traditional Irish culture. As well as publishing his book The Rose in the Gap he has played, taught and lectured throughout the world.

His talk will highlight the rich body of dance music, song and dance that was in circulation in Counties Louth, Armagh, Monaghan and Cavan over 100 year ago. The influence of Scottish music and culture celebrated in this area will also be examined 

A Power Point presentation illuminating the concert lecture will feature landscape images of the area, maps locating the music to place, and quality images of the original hand written manuscripts from the Donnellan collection which are been made available for the first time. Music will be played live by the author. 

This 50 min presentation will feature Gerry giving the background to the Gaelic Cultural revival of the early 20th Century . He will describe the process of re-imaginating this unique body of melodies from the dusty archives of University College Dublin and will perform a variety tunes from the collection, presenting all in an entertaining and professional manner. 

Iúr Cinn Fleadh runs from 5 - 8 September with three Newry Town Hall concerts: A comedy night ‘You Must be Joking’ with May McFetridge, Gene Fitzpatrick, Jimmy Cricket and George Jones, Thursday 5 September, £22.50; The Kilfenora Céilí Band in Concert, Friday 6 September, £20 and Paul Brady in a solo concert, Saturday 7 September, £35.
