Cúpla Focal

In the last unit we looked at identifying jobs. In this unit we will develop some model answers on what people might do in certain jobs.

If you are attending an Irish class with a teacher, you can get help with working on your own answer. If you need additional help, perhaps you are learning at home and you don’t have a teacher, feel free to contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  But please be very specific in your query.

We will break this unit into three types of jobs and we will be building on our list of verbs in particular.

We’ll start with a mainly manual job – a cleaner

Cén cineál oibre a dhéanann tú?

Is glantóir mé. Tá mé ag obair san otharlann

I am a cleaner. I work in the hospital

Is glantóir mé. Tá mé ag obair san otharlann

A simple answer to the question cén cineál oibre a dhéanann tú? would be

Bím ag mapáil, ag scuabadh agus ag dustáil

I mop, brush and dust (with the sense of the continous or habitual present tense – bím. I do be, if you like)

Bím ag mapáil, ag scuabadh agus ag dustáil

And now for a non-manual job – a teacher

Cén cineál oibre a dhéanann tú?

Is múinteoir mé. Tá mé ag obair i scoil áitiúil

I am a teacher. I work in a local school

Is múinteoir mé. Tá mé ag obair i scoil áitiúil

Bím ag pleanáil, ag marcáil agus ag teagasc

I plan, I mark and I teach

Bím ag pleanáil, ag marcáil agus ag teagasc

Bím ag pleanáil, ag marcáil agus ag teagasc

Let’s finish with a job we didn’t meet in the previous unit – feirmeoir, farmer

An bhfuil jab ar bith agat?

Sea, is feirmeoir mé

An bhfuil jab ar bith agat?

Sea, is feirmeoir mé

Yes, I am a farmer

To expand your vocabulary, we’ll focus on the farmer’s main activities.

Tugaim aire do na hainmhithe

I take care of the animals

Tugaim aire do na hainmhithe

Tá caorigh agus ba agam

I have sheep and cows

Tá caorigh agus ba agam

Déanaim na ba a bhli dhá uair gach lá

I milk the cows twice a day

Déanaim na ba a bhli dhá uair gach lá

And in a little linguistic flourish:

Bím ag obair ó dhubh go dubh

I work from early to late (literally from black to black)

Bím ag obair ó dhubh go dubh

So let’s run all four sentences together:

Cén cineál oibre a dhéanann tú i do jab?

Tugaim aire do na hainmhithe

Tá caorigh agus ba agam

Déanaim na ba a bhli dhá uair gach lá

Bím ag obair ó dhubh go dubh

Cén cineál oibre a dhéanann tú i do jab?

Tugaim aire do na hainmhithe

Tá caorigh agus ba agam

Déanaim na ba a bhli dhá uair gach lá

Bím ag obair ó dhubh go dubh

And just to help you build a selection of work-related verbs, listen to the following list.

The opening to the sentence will be ‘Bím ag’ I do be, whatever the activity is.

Bím ag tabhairt aire do pháistí.

I look after children.

Bím ag tabhairt aire do pháistí.

Bím ag ordú stuif

I order stuff

Bím ag ordú stuif

Bím ag eagrú rudaí

I organise things

Bím ag eagrú rudaí

Bím ag tiomáint leoraí

I drive a lorry

Bím ag tiomáint leoraí

Bím ag tabhairt comhairle do pháistí

I give advice to children

Bím ag tabhairt comhairle do pháistí

Bím ag scríobh don nuachtán

I write for the paper

Bím ag scríobh don nuachtán

Sin go leor scríofa agam – that’s enough written by mé, sin go leor scríofa agamsa - go dtí an chéad Aonad eile, slán go fóill.
