Irish Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys has announced a €2.8M regeneration and revitalisation project for the village of Omeath.

The project will create improved linkages to Carlingford Lough Greenway (Great Eastern Greenway) and support the development of the village as a stop-off tourist destination on the greenway in order to increase footfall. It will also support the creation of visitor-focused local businesses. The announcement also mentions the provision of a pedestrian zone in the centre of the village.

The development of Greenway linkages will also benefit Newry residents in the coming years when the Newry Canal towpath and Greenway from Albert Basin is finally linked up as a continuous route to Omeath.

Announcing the funding Minister Humphreys said “Just three weeks ago, the Government launched Our Rural Future, the most ambitious and transformational policy for rural development in decades."

“Today we are putting that policy firmly into action and delivering major investment aimed at town centre regeneration and supporting remote working."

“These projects will breathe new life into towns and villages across the country making them attractive and vibrant places for people to live, work, socialise and raise a family."

Speaking about the news, Senator John McGahon said "It will regenerate and revitalise the centre of the Village and will provide a new shared space and create pedestrian priority zone. The project will support the development of the village as a destination on the greenway, attracting users to the village centre, facilitating the creation of visitor-focused local businesses and contribute to the overall sustainable social and economic growth of Omeath."

=Councillor Antóin Watters added “Well done to Louth County Council and the local groups involved. I have raised the issue of funding for Omeath and highlighted numerous concerns of local residents with Louth County Council, for a number of years now."
