Newry men Eamon Murphy and Mark Winters are having a Christmas Day with a difference this year, or rather the early hours of it!
The well known runners are running a full marathon tomorrow morning around the district in aid of the Southern Area Hospice. They will be out bright and breezy ready to start at 5am, They have already raised nearly 3 times their original target of £1000 on their fundraising page. The pair will run as far as Scarva on the original Newry Marathon route.

Commenting on the run Eamon said "Every year many thousands of pounds are fundraised by the running community to support our local hospice. I myself have had the privilege to run London Marathon in 2012 & 2013 as part of the SAH fundraising teams. Mark has completed the Dublin Marathon 2013 and the 2015 London Marathon while fundraising for SAH.

"As we are all aware 2020 has hit charities like the SAH hard . There has been zero income from the annual group trips to some of the worlds greatest Marathons... London, New York, Boston, Chicago to name a few. Other runners complete other smaller events to support the SAH and as everything has been postponed, this has all had a devastating affect on funding. With this in mind we would like to do at least a little, to help the SAH in the amazing services they provide in our community."

Eamon concludes "We would be very grateful if you could support this cause through our challenge to complete the Newry City Marathon (26.2 miles) on Christmas Morning 2020."

Taking in the original Newry City Marathon route they will also be tipping the hat to those pioneers who established the Newry City Marathon (first run in 2008) and hoping to see it returned to its place on the local and national running calendar.
