Christmas came early for Mr Alan Crozier from Warrenpoint who was awarded December’s Recycler of the Month. The competition is sponsored by ‘Around a Pound’ in partnership with Newry and Mourne Council to encourage residents to recycle in their blue recycling bin. Samuel was awarded the £50 voucher for his excellent recycling efforts.

Alan has both the blue and brown bin and enjoys recycling as much as he can. Both bins were filled with the correct materials and material in the blue bin was washed and squashed where possible.

Alan said, “I feel it is my civic duty to try and stop as much of my waste as possible from going to landfill. If I can reuse or donate something to charity this will be my first port of call but after that I try to separate all my wastes and recycle them either in my kerbside bins or at the Household Recycling Centre- very little of my household waste ends up in my black bin going to landfill.”

The recycling officer checked 20 bins at random in Warrenpoint and was pleased that all the bins checked contained mostly the correct materials. A small amount of food waste, polystyrene and plastic film was found in some bins, these items cannot be recycled in the blue bin.

Tara Cunningham, recycling officer said, “The Christmas season produces more waste than any other time of the year I ask everyone in the District to please follow Alan’s example and try to sort their waste for recycling. Excess waste can be recycled at any of our HRC’s which are open as normal, apart from the 25th and 26th of December and the 1st of January, when they will be closed.”
