A Syrian family have had windows broken in their Carlingford Park home and racist grafitti sprayed on the property on Saturday night in a horrific racist attack.

In a thankfully rare incident for Newry, the family who have recently moved in to the area had to be moved to another home. Local polical and community representatives have roundly condemned the incident.

Grafitti sprayed on the Carlingford Park home.

Newry City Councillor, Cllr Gavin Malone said "We the people of Ireland have populated the world and we would not accept our people being targeted and racially abuse. I call on all the people of Newry City to totally condemn this disgraceful racial attack and rally around this family, at this challenging time. I also call on the cowards who carried out this attack to stop their racial abuse immediately."

Anger And Disgust

Newry City Councillor, Cllr Valerie Harte has said that there is anger and disgust within the local community.

Cllr Harte said "I am both disgusted and saddened to learn of this attack on this family who have just recently moved into the area. This  was a cowardly attack carried out under the cover of darkness and forced this  family to flee their home. There is anger and disgust throughout the local community.

"This hate attack must be condemned unequivocally, there is no room for racism in our society. This is being investigated as a hate crime, and anyone with any information about it  should contact the Police.

Traumatising ordeal

Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty has also spoke of the vile incident  "I am very concerned to learn of this attack on a young family’s home. What is even more distressing is the potential that this attack was racially motivated. I understand as a result of this traumatising ordeal the young family has now subsequently fled their own home. Newry is an incredibly diverse and vibrant city and for any individual or family to be targeted simply because of their ethnicity or nationality is vile and wrong.

Stand united

Newry City  Councillor, Cllr Michael Savage added "I am under no doubt whatsoever the local and wider community of Newry will rally around and do whatever they can to support this family. It is crucial we all stand united to support our neighbours and fellow citizens to show in the strongest form that racism has no place in our society. I appeal to anyone with information regarding this sickening hate crime to bring it forward to the Police immediately."

True community spirit in midst of trauma

Councilllor Gavin Malone has expressed his pride in neighbours and local community champions who were quick to rally round and help the family, the "true community spirit".

Cllr Malone said "I would like to congratulate all the residents of Carlingford Park and the wider Newry City area for the tremendous support and care they have shown our Syrian neighbours, who unfortunately were the victims of a hate / racial crime last night. The local community did all in their power to support their shocked neighbours with cups of tea, food etc

"Nameless and cowardly thugs smashed nearly every one of the windows of the house, this young Syrian family were living in.

"I would also like to thank the statutory and voluntary organisations who work tirelessly to ensure this young family were rehoused and transported with their belongings.

"I felt pride while witnessing the true community spirit in our city , and the large numbers who came together to care and support this Syrian family at the time of their greatest need.

"I totally condemn this hate / racial attack and call on our community to help identify those involved and also prevent similar incidents in the future."
