IRecycling Officer Tara Cunningham call for local gardeners to rethink wasten celebration of Compost Awareness Week 6th – 12th May, gardeners in Newry and Mourne will be able to pick up a free bag of compost next Friday the 10th of May.

The compost is supplied by Natural World Products in Armagh, and is made up from the organic waste collected in the brown bin scheme and the Council’s Household Recycling Centre’s.

Mayor Cllr John McArdle said, “30% of the waste an average household produces can be composted. Composting helps to significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Householders in the area composted nearly 6000t of kitchen and garden waste last year. We want to build on this success and encourage everyone to recycle their food and garden waste in their brown bin or at their local Household Recycling Centre.”

To claim a free bag of compost make your way to Newry, Kilkeel, Warrenpoint, Crossmaglen, Hilltown, Aughnagun, Newtownhamilton and Camlough Household Recycling Centres on Friday 10th May. Customers will also be able to claim 1 large green sack if they recycle greenwaste. Due to the popularity of this giveaway and limited availability customers are advised that they should come early to avoid disappointment and that there is only one bag per customer.

Competition Time

Fancy being a wormery wonder? Wormeries are ideal for people who don’t produce garden waste or have limited outside space. Small amounts of garden waste can go into a wormery, together with some cooked food scraps.

Home compost your food and garden waste - Composting at home provides a free and nutritious plant food that can be used to help grow fruit and veg. All sorts of things can be composted- from vegetable peelings to eggs shells, tea bags to garden waste - all helping to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Newry and Mourne District Council are also running a competition on their Facebook page. The 1st Prize is a wormery and 2nd prize is a home compost bin. To be in with a chance of winning, visit Newry and Mourne Councils Facebook page and answer the Compost Awareness Week competition question.
