A lockdown project by well known Bessbrook woman Kathleen Moore has seen a new album of best loved Irish hymns and songs recorded to raise funds for SS Peter and Paul Church in Bessbrook. The album can be bought either as a physical copy or a digital download via  WWW.TRYTHEALTERNATIVE.NET

SS Peter and Paul Church, Bessbrook

Kathleen has been singing in church choirs for almost sixty years and has also been involve in the Armagh Diocesan Lourdes choir, participating in the annual pilgrimage at Lourdes. In 2018 together with some choir members from the Parish of Lower Killeavy they were privileged to participate in the choir singing in Dublin for the papal visit of Pope Francis.

Kathleen explains "I am also involved in the bringing together of choirs from all denominations of our local parish churches for the annual ‘Carols Together.   This is my first ever CD and had lockdown not come about, it may not have happened as, along with our fundraising committee, we have been busy for the past three years raising much needed funds to restore our beautiful church of SS Peter & Paul, Bessbrook, but as with many other organisations, following lockdown, fundraising was not possible.  It was during lockdown, I decided to attempt at safe fundraiser in compiling this CD.

"I wish to thank all involved in putting together this CD. I thank God for the privileges, graces and blessings he has afforded me during my life."

Kathleen's twin, Elizabeth tragically died in January due to Covid and "consequently grief and profound sadness was very much with me and indeed still is, but I need to continue attempting to bring further much needed funds in for our church." Kathleen explains.

The album entitled 'How Great Thou Art' was recorded within the historic walls of the Church of SS Peter & Paul Bessbrook with all proceeds to help towards its restoration.

For almost 150 years, the bell at the church of SS Peter & Paul has tolled across the picturesque village of Bessbrook in Co. Armagh, calling people to prayer and song.

On a dark November evening in 2020, in the misty midst of lockdown, that bell rang out with a new and special significance, heralding the first sound you’ll hear on this unique recording of hymns and songs celebrating one and a half centuries of community and musical history.

Although the church is now badly in need of repair, (funds from this album will help in its much-needed restoration), the majestic acoustics within the walls of SS Peter and Paul add their own magic to the voice of Kathleen Moore, organist Colm Murphy and pianist Doreen Finnegan.

You’ll find an uplifting collection here of Irish hymns and songs that have stood the test of time - the kind of music that helps us celebrate times of joy and also gives us strength in the darkest of times.

But in the midst of these familiar and much-loved hymns, prepare yourself for some unexpected gems too - such as the Irish lyrics of A Mhuire Mhátháir sung to a Maori melody from the other side of the world and a composition from the great Johann Sebastian Bach, the latter piece among the beautiful instrumentals from Colm Murphy on organ.

‘How Great Thou Art’ is an album that will endure and travel well and the fading beauty of the church which it celebrates and supports is to be seen in the superb photography on the CD cover and booklet.

This unique collection, recorded and produced by Colum Sands, is available worldwide as a download, and as a CD online order. You can purchase via
