Medical staff count a patient’s heatbeat to discover how healthy they are, in the same way we are encouraging to people to count butterflies to assess the health of the environment. The Big Butterfly Count is a nationwide survey now in its fourth year and runs from 19th July to 10th August. Big Butterfly Count has rapidly become the world’s biggest survey of butterflies.

Staff from Newry and Mourne District Council, working in partnership with experts from Butterfly Conservation NI, will be on hand at Slieve Gullion to help identify butterflies and moths and show how simple it is to count the butterflies on your patch. There will also be butterfly crafts and even butterfly facepainting to keep everyone happy on the day.

More and more people are helping survey these colourful insects every year and with on-line systems and easy-to-use apps for smart phones to help identify and record our wildlife it is easier than ever for the people of Newry and Mourne to get involved in real citizen science.
