The Council successfully secured £288,000 funding from the Department of the Environment’s (DOE’s) Rethink Waste campaign for the purchase of the bins, kitchen caddies and a refuse collection vehicle. This has facilitated a new brown bin collection route and means that an additional 4,000 households can recycle their organic waste.

The bins were distributed all over the District in areas including Annalong, Bessbrook, Camlough, Cross, Culloville, Hilltown, Kilkeel, Mayobridge, Newry, Rostrevor, Silverbridge and Warrenpoint. The project objectives are to increase recycling of food and garden waste within the district.

Speaking at the launch Mayor Cllr Michael Ruane said, “This scheme will divert waste from landfill and ultimately save ratepayers money. This is not only good for the economy but has tremendous environmental benefits. Organic waste thrown into the black bin goes to landfill where it decomposes releasing harmful gases and liquids, however when it is recycled in the brown bin it is made into a good quality compost by Natural World Products.”

The Director, Mr Jim McCorry said, “This is a fantastic help to us in our aim to make recycling as convenient and accessible to as many people as possible. With help from the Rethink Waste Campaign we are taking steps to avoid substantial EU fines whilst at the same time putting no extra burden on our ratepayers.”

All cooked and uncooked food waste along with garden waste (i.e. grass cuttings and hedge clippings can be recycled in the brown bins. For those residents who have not yet received a brown bin, garden waste can be brought to any of the local household recycling centres to be recycled.
