Tara Cunningham, Newry and Mourne District Council presents the award to Alex Young (Colette’s daughter) and Colette Gannon (Recycler of the Month). Ballymartin resident Colette Gannon has won the title of October Recycler of the Month! The competition, sponsored by the Department of the Environment’s (DOE’s) Rethink Waste campaign in partnership with Newry and Mourne District Council, awards £50 to householders who use their recycling bins correctly.

Colette has both a blue and brown bin and is very particular that all her family and friends use both to their full recycling potential. Her blue bin was filled with the correct recyclable material including glass, cans and cardboard. Colette was very pleased to get her updated blue bin information leaflet and sticker and immediately put the sticker on her blue bin as a constant reminder of what should put in the recycling bin. She also uses Kilkeel Household Recycling Centre for waste electrical items.

This month officers are happy to report that most residents are using their blue bin correctly with very little contamination present. Householders are reminded that clean glass and tetra pak can now be recycled in the blue bin. However plastic bags/film including crisp packets and sweet wrapping can cause huge processing problems, cannot be recycled and should be placed into the black bin.

For more information about recycling or if you haven’t received your updated blue bin leaflet and sticker, please contact Tara Cunningham on (028) 30313233 or email For information on the Rethink Waste campaign please log on to
