Members of the Newry Philippine Community at a previous fund raising event.Thursday week (5th of December) sees a fundraising Concert in aid of the Philippines Disaster at Newry Town Hall

The Concert will raise much needed money for victims of the typhoon that recently swept through the Philippines, causing thousands of deaths.

Typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda as it is known to the Filiponos, with a wind speed of 235 miles per hour ripped buildings to shreds, took loved ones out to sea on the massive storm surge, crushed humanity in Samar Tacloban, Cebu, Guiuan  and numerous other neighbourhoods, towns and villages destroying everything human, animal and plant in it's terrible wake.

The images affected the residents of Newry greatly but other people resident in Newry and Mourne and South Armagh looked on helplessly as friends and family  suffered and still suffer terribly, in the aftermath of typhoon Haiyan. In our community these gentle natured and respectable people work in the Care homes, hospitals and service industries without complaint and have over the past ten years integrated fully into the fabric and society of this area and this Island.

The Filipino Society in  Newry and Mourne and Armagh area, with practical and logistical support from Newry  and Mourne Council as well as great help from the local community have organised the concert and they are being supported by Susan McCann, Blackthorn, The Charlene Mcfee Irish Dance School, The Virtuoso Ivanov from Bulgaria, The Upducky Band, Filipina singer Sarah Bengco and other Philippine artistes.

It is hoped that the great people of Newry will view this concert as a great cause to support, tickets are a very reasonable £5 for concessions and £7 for adults and are available from the Arts CentreNewry, Carlin  Records, KFC Newry, members of the Philippines community and at the door on the night.

All proceeds will go to the Red Cross disaster appeal

Commenting on the event Mayor of Newry and Mourne Micky Ruane said "It is not only essential that this Concert will  help raise funds for the victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan which has devastated central Philippines, but it is important to let the Filipino community living here know that we value them and recogonise their worry and pain about their loved ones. Newry and Mourne Council will give what help it can to those organising the fund raising event".
