The venue will enable full adherence to Covid safe distance requirements. We appreciate the support of the  National Trust staff and ‘The Friends of Derrymore” for this event and urge anyone participating on this walk to respect the environment and the location.

Minister Conor Murphy, Patricia Lynch (Friends of Derrymore) Cllr Declan Murphy, Laurence Bradley (Chairperson Craobh Rua) Tiarnan O Hare (Armagh Junior Hurler of the Year) and Pat McGinn  (Secretary Craobh Rua) launching Darkness into Light at Derrymore House.

PIPs Hope & Support are a Charity Partner of Pieta House and will be receiving 50% of what this event raises"

By taking part in  Darkness Into Light participants will unite in every corner of Ireland to help shine a light on suicide and self-harm while raising vital funds for Pieta’s and PIPs  lifesaving services”.

Speaking also at the launch of the event Assembly  Finance Minister Conor Murphy said the tragedy of suicide is one that has touched nearly all sectors and communities in Ireland.

The Newry & Armagh MLA said “The Suicide and self harm  rate remains stubbornly high. The tragedy of suicide is one that has touched nearly all sectors and communities in Ireland.

I have no doubt that, through the unstinting efforts of voluntary and community groups and statutory services, lives have been saved.

However, every life lost is one too many and we must continue to work together across government and other sectors to reduce the incidence of suicide”.

Raymond Flynn who has been coordinating the event through his association with Pieta House speaking at the launch  said “One year on from when the country went into lockdown, Suicide Prevention  services  are in demand more than ever and they need the public’s support. Electric Ireland is proud to support Pieta for a ninth year and together with Pieta are encouraging people to register at WWW.DARKNESSINTOLIGHT.IE to take part in a special Darkness into Light that can unite us all whilst still staying physically apart

Together, we can build a brighter future and give hope to all who have been impacted by suicide and self-harm here locally, throughout Ireland and across the globe”.

Councillor Declan Murphy who has played a key role liaising with the National Trust to ensure this event would take place, talking about the importance of challenging the stigma related in particular to self harm said,

“It is important we are not afraid to talk about all aspects of mental health. We must challenge the stigma and continue to offer support.

This Darkness into Light event will hopefully ensure that the issues of suicide and self harm are taken seriously and that  the pressures felt by voluntary and community sector organisations providing suicide prevention services are alleviated through appropriate resourcing and financial support”.

Armagh Junior Hurler of the year Tiarnan O Hare who attended the Darkness Into Light launch at Derramor Forest  said that it was important that those in need of support knew there was help,

“The message I and all of us involved with this event want to get out today is that there is help and support out there. There are great organisations and people in the community who can and do help.”

Donations can be made to the event through the direct payment address below WWW.DARKNESSINTOLIGHT.IE or by Donation on the morning of the Event
