Pride in Newry have been allocated an additional £50k of funding at yesterdays Newry, Mourne and Down Council, Enterprise Regeneration and Tourism Committee meeting in Newry.

Pride in Newry will host UK and Ireland Pride in the city at the end of August. It's on top of £60K agreed by ERT in December. The decision will have to be ratified at full council meeting in March.

Councillor, Pete Byrne has welcomed the support of the Enterprise Regeneration and Tourism Committee.

Cllr Byrne said, “I am delighted to propose this additional funding for UK and Ireland Pride 2019 in Newry City. This funding from our Council’s tourism budget brings the total for this international festival to £110,000 and will allow the Newry Rainbow Community to host a world class event this coming August. We cannot underestimate the potential this event will have for Newry City and the entire district. We will be attracting visitors from all over the world and we must put our best foot forward.”

The Slieve Gullion representative concluded “I am still keen to explore other sources of funding to ensure the Newry Rainbow Community has what it needs to pull this off. Next month we will be hosting the European Pride Organisers Association as they bring their board meeting to Newry City. This will be an opportunity to showcase our city and we have planned for UK and Ireland Pride this August.”

Last years UK pride was held on the Isle of Wight. It's planned that this years event will attract many thousands to Newry.
