A recent Carers Week event organised by the Brain Injury Foundation has been commended by MP Mickey Brady who attended the 'Who cares for the carers' event. Mr Brady emphasised how important it is to raise awareness and highlight the hard work carried out by carers on a daily basis.

“This was an informative event and I commend Frank Dolaghan , the Brain Injury Foundation and all involved. Amongst the important matters discussed were issues such as Carers Allowances, Supported Living, Respite Care and the way forward in relation to a Carers Strategy”

The Newry and Armagh MP added “There are currently 220,000 people in the north who are carers. It  is important to highlight the full extent of their duties and commitment which often goes unnoticed.

Sinn Féin believe carers rights need to be supported and on a statutory footing to recognise the invaluable contribution carers play across our society and health and social care system.

“The role of a carer can be challenging and often people face battles of their own - over 70% say their mental health has suffered as a result of their caring role.

“It is an economic imperative that we give carers the full support in which they deserve, particularly as over 24% of carers saying they have given up work to care”

Concluding Mr Brady said “I will continue to work with the wide range of carers organisations to promote carers rights and interests. It is important we look after those who look after others.”
