The Home of St Patrick Festival kicked off today with a performance from the Newry Trad Youth Orchestra in Down Cathedral and it kicks off a packed week of events locally.

Saturday 10 March we have the hugely popular South Armagh Tailteann Games at Shane O’Neills GFC, Camlough from 1pm – 6pm and it's completely free. Inspired by the ancient Celtic Tailteann Games, this event will include local teams competing against each other for the Tailteann Trophy in ancient sports.

The Tailteann Games will commence at 1.00pm with an introductory ceremony from our Celtic Warriors and the competing teams. As well as our games there are many interactive activities for all the family to enjoy including archery, falconry, celtic crafts, petting farm and much more. On completion of the ancient games a themed banquet to celebrate the competitors and victors will be served at 5.00pm.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson Cllr Roisin Mulgrew with the Very Reverend Henry Hull, and Ursula Burns, director of Newry, Trad Youth Orchestra, are pictured at the opening event of the 2018 St Patrick’s Festival in the Down Cathedral in Downpatrick today.

Patrick the Musical tells the amazing story of Ireland’s own patron saint in vibrant music and song. From the colourful scenes of a St Patrick’s Day parade, we travel back in time to hear Patrick himself describing the incredible life he lived, from wealthy teenage rebel, to a slave held captive by raiders. We relive Patrick’s dramatic dream that set in motion events that turned Ireland upside down! With strong, catchy melodies and dramatic Celtic vibes, Irish dance and mesmerising storytelling, this is a foot-tapping musical of a life that changed Ireland forever.

Friday 16 March sees The Raparee Five present Redmond O'Hanlon: The Life and Death of an Outlaw in Sean Hollywood Arts Centre, Newry at 7.30pm. Tickets £8/£6

This compelling tale is brought to life using narration, original songs, and dramatic portrayals of the principal characters.

Our story begins at Downpatrick Gaol, in 1681, with a mother lamenting the loss of her son, Redmond O'Hanlon. The story unfolds in flashback, as we journey with Redmond and his friends, family, and enemies. As Redmond's fate creeps closer, treachery and bloodshed are never far away.

St Patrick’s Day itself will see Newry awash with music and crack.

The St Patrick’s Day Carnival Parade takes place at 12.00pm. The theme of ‘Myths and Legends’ will provide a fantastic colourful display of floats, bands, vehicle, community organisations and more. The parade route follows the Albert Basin, Buttercane Quay, Merchant Quay, Sugar Island, Kildare Street and The Mall.

There will also be plenty of family Fun Activities from  1.00pm – 4.00pm on Hill Street. Enjoy a range of free fun activities including music, dance, song, stalls and much more.

St Patrick's night sees the Cross Border Orchestra at Newry Town Hall, 7.30pm. Admission £10

The Voice of the Irish concert takes its inspiration from St Patrick writing in his Confessio that it was literally ‘the voice of the Irish’ calling to him to return and introduce Christianity to Ireland. This concert will be given by the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland with its own inspirational complement of up to 100 young musicians from across Ireland performing a light and highly tuneful programme of popular songs, movie themes and classics. Don’t miss a unique experience of one of the largest orchestral line-ups ever. Pre-booking is essential through Sean Hollywood Arts Centre.

The Festival includes a global programme of local and international music, theatre, sport, spoken word and spirituality taking place throughout Newry, Mourne and Down.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Rosin Mulgrew said, “An array of historical events, musical performances, family fun days, sporting events and cross-community carnivals are being hosted in many iconic locations, cultural landmarks and sites of historical interest across the district, all of which have been designed to highlight the significance of St Patrick’s influence on the region and pay homage to his life, work and teachings.”

Councillor Mulgrew continued, “After a hugely successful inaugural event in 2017, this year’s Home of Saint Patrick Festival will continue to deliver an arts and culture extravaganza that will ensure that our local and international visitors can join with the wider community to celebrate St Patrick in his adopted homeland.  Make sure you pick up a programme from any of our Visitor Information Centres or download it from our website and don’t miss out on these very special events.”

Another one of the highlights of this year’s festival is ‘Flutes, Pipes and Drums’ on Thursday 15 March at Annalong Community Centre. The evening will be curated and compered by TV and BBC Radio Ulster’s ‘Pipes and Drums’ presenter, Mark Wilson and incorporate some of the finest marching and concert bands in the country. Come along and enjoy world class pipe band drumming and a special percussion performance by former Northern Ireland Young Musician of the year, Craig Lutton, and the Percussion Ensemble from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, London.

Throughout St Patrick’s Day, the region will come alive with colour and noise as fantastic carnival processions make their way through Newry and Downpatrick.  Local communities will come together with visitors to the region in a celebration of local talent, dance and entertainment.  Free family fun activities will also take place throughout the day in both locations, for everyone to enjoy.

This year’s Closing Concert takes its inspiration from St Patrick, writing in his Confession that it was ‘the voice of the Irish’ which called him to return and introduce Christianity to Ireland.  The Concert will be performed by the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland in Newry Town Hall on Saturday 17 March at 7.30pm.  The Orchestra comprises of up to 100 young musicians from across Ireland who will stage a light hearted programme of popular songs, movie themes and classics interspersed with readings and performances by some of Ireland’s leading actors and musicians. This will be a unique and fitting finale to the 10 day Festival, which will showcase today’s ‘voice of the Irish’.
