It was evident that Councillor Barra Ó Muirí, Chair of the Irish Language Committee, was delighted when he presented certificates and fáinní to NMDC staff who completed three terms of Irish language classes recently.

Praising those staff who had completed the language course, Councillor Ó Muirí said that he was certain that their efforts would encourage the use of Irish in the everyday life of the community and establish the language as a central part of the Council’s work practice:

‘While it is great to see our native language on the likes of the Council signage, I am overjoyed at hearing well-spoken Irish from those enthusiasts here today. There is no doubt that Newry and Mourne District Council is committed to supporting the use of Irish with our Bilingualism Policy that promotes the rights of Irish speakers and equality of opportunity. As part of that commitment to increase service provision through the medium of Irish to develop the competency of the Council a series of Irish language classes was established to meet employees’ language needs’.

15 employees attended the first term of classes with 8 completing the three term course. Councillor Ó Muirí presented staff members with certificates and fáinní at a special ceremony in the Conference Room at Monaghan Row on Friday 27th December 2014.

The Irish Language Unit organised the classes with funding provided by the Good Relations Unit to hire a tutor.

Ba léir go raibh lúcháir an tsaoil ar an Chomhairleoir Barra Ó Muirí, Cathaoirleach de Choiste na Gaeilge, nuair a bhronn sé teastais agus fáinní ar roinnt ball d’fhoireann Chomhairle an Iúir agus Mhúrn a bhfuil trí théarma de ranganna Gaeilge tugtha chun críche acu le déanaí.

Agus é ag tabhairt ardmholadh dóibh uilig dúirt an Comhairleoir Ó Muirí go raibh sé cinnte go gcabhródh a gcuid iarrachtaí le húsáid na Gaeilge a spreagadh i gnáthshaoil an phobail agus í a bhuanú mar pháirt lárnach de mhodhanna oibre na Comhairle:

‘Is maith an rud é an teanga dhúchais a fheiceáil ar chomharthaíocht na Comhairle agus a leithéid de rud ach cuireann sé i bhfad  níos mó gliondar ar mo chroí an Ghaeilge bhinn bhlasta a chluinstin ar bhéal na ndaoine díograiseacha atá anseo inniu. Níl aon amhras ann ach go bhfuil Comhairle an Iúir agus Mhúrn tiomanta d’ úsáid na Gaeilge agus dár bPolasaí Dátheangachais a chuireas cearta lucht labhartha na Gaeilge agus comhionannas deise chun tosaigh. Mar chuid den tiomantas seo agus d’fhonn soláthar seirbhíse trí mheán na Gaeilge a mhéadú agus acmhainneacht na Comhairle a fhorbairt cuireadh sraith ranganna ar bun le freastal ar riachtanais teanga na n-oibrithe.’

D’fhreastail cúigear déag ar na ranganna sa chéad téarma agus chuir ochtar cúrsa trí théarma i gcrích. Bhronn Comhairleoir Barra Ó Muirí teastais agus fáinní ar baill d’fhoireann na Comhairle ag ócáid ar leith i Seomra na Comhdhála ar 27 Meitheamh 2014.

D’eagraigh Aonad na Gaeilge na ranganna le maoiniú a chuir an Rannóg DeaChaidrimh ar fáil chun teagascóir a fhostú.
