The 2020 Wake the Giant and Footsteps in the Forest events have been cancelled.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council made the decision due to the ongoing Government guidelines in relation to the COVID-19 response.

In a statement a council spokesperson said "it is with regret that the Council has had to take the decision to cancel this year’s Wake the Giant Festival in Warrenpoint and the Footsteps in the Forest Event in Slieve Gullion. It is recognised that these events have entertained and engaged thousands of visitors and local residents since their inception in 2016, and have become much-anticipated each year. The decision not to host the events this year was made with public health and safety in mind. Forthcoming tourism events will be reviewed in line with the latest Government advice and guidance."

The statement added "Due to the current restrictions precluding mass gatherings at large events, the Council is currently progressing plans to bring new and innovative arts and culture initiatives to local audiences and to provide support for the arts and events sectors in the district through various programmes. Further details on this will be released in the coming weeks."
