A former Newry man, now living in New Zealand has contacted Newry.ie to see if we can help track down some of his old friends.

Ralph Jellett
Ralph Jellett

Ralph Jellett left Newry in the early 1960's and he now lives in Waverley, New Zealand.

Brefni O'Rourke and Pat McCormack are two friends that he would love to hear from.

Jellett remembers that Brefni O Rouke's parents owned a bakery shop on Hill Street in the town and one down the Quays "where people used to catch the bus."

He can't recall the house they lived in but it was way up a hill to get to it in lovely grounds that had two excellent houses in. Jellett recalls that if you carried on past the road you would come to Daisy Hill Hospital,  where he himself was born. Possibly Pound Road?

Jellett left Newry the first time to join a religious order in Cork at the age of 14. He later came back from Rockwell College to help his Dad in his shop when he was closing down. It was called Mullan's but his father Louis Jellett inherited it when he arrived from the States and following the death of Mr Mullan. His father was about 12 when he came to Newry from New York.

Jellett believes Brefni went to England and kept at baking. He had two sisters one of them was called Clodagh. He was a student at St Joseph's as was Pat Mc Cormack.

He thinks Pat had a cousin in one of the estates close to Dromalane Church, on the left as you go onto Dublin Road.

Jellett explains "Pat was on that road before you get to the Dublin road in a little house that no doubt is no longer there. He had a chicken chest as we called in those days and his mother was in a wheelchair for almost all her life. All this was from 1959 to 1962."

Ralph's brother Paul passed away a couple of months ago.

If anyone can throw any light on Jelletts search please comment or send us a private message and we can get you in touch.

Ralph Jellet and I were best friends during the summer of 1957. I’m from the Madison area in Wisconsin, U.S.A.  I was staying with my grandmother who owned McClelland’s Dress shop, next door to Brendan Gallagher’s green grocer and across the street from Mullans tobacconist.
