The Funeral of popular Mournes Councillor, Cllr Sean Doran takes place tomorrow Monday 29 November with his remains leaving his late residence,12 Springdale Cresent Scrogg Road, Kilkeel at 11.00am for 12.00 noon Requiem Mass in St. Colman's Church Massforth. Burial afterwards in adjoining cemetery. Sean is survived by his son's Neill and Ruairi. mother Theresa and sister Mary.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have paid tribute to Councillor Doran who passed away on Friday.

In a statement a Council spokesperson said "It is with deep regret that the councillors and staff of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have learned of the death of Councillor Sean Doran, who passed away on 26 November 2021.  The Council would like to express its heartfelt sympathy to his family on their very great loss.

"Councillor Doran served local government for over 10 years, first as a councillor for the former Newry and Mourne District Council before it became Newry, Mourne and Down District Council in 2015.  He was a dedicated public servant who was a passionate advocate for the people within the Mournes District Electoral Area for which he represented, and across the district council."

A great Loss

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Cathy Mason said, “I am profoundly sorry to hear of the death of my friend and colleague, Councillor Sean Doran. My condolences go out to his two sons, Neill and Ruairí, his mother Teresa and sister Mary, and to his wider family circle at this very difficult time.  He will be a great loss to the Council and his constituents, for which he always went the extra mile. His work ethic and integrity were inspiring, and he will be remembered for the contribution he made to this place."

A Council spokesperson added "During his time as councillor, he worked tirelessly to ensure the delivery of many important campaigns and projects for his constituents, including numerous community centres, sports facilities and playing fields.  A previous member of Mourne Heritage Trust, he was passionate about conservation matters.  He was also dedicated to the economic and wellbeing of his community and had been a non-executive member of the Warrenpoint Harbour Authority from 2015-2020 and sat on the Newry, Mourne and Down PCSP board for 6 years.  He was a respected man with huge civic pride, these will remain as a fitting legacy to him and his hard work.

"His passing is mourned throughout the area where he will long be remembered."

Devastated

Speaking on behalf of the Sinn Féin Group, Group Leader Barra Ó Muirí said "I am devastated to hear that Sean has passed away and on behalf of the Sinn Féin Council group I send our deepest condolences to his Sons Ruairí and Neill, his Mother and wider family circle at this sad time.

"Sean brought so much to his role as Councillor. He was a fantastic mentor to newly-elected Councillors and always provided good advice and guidance.

"He never looked for praise or recognition but diligently worked away for his constituents.

Heartbroken

Deputy leader Oonagh Hanlon commented "We are heartbroken to learn of Sean’s passing. Sean was a tireless worker and an inspiration to all who knew him. He had a sharp political mind and a ferocious work ethic and always put the interests of the people of his beloved Mournes first. We are privileged to have had Sean as a friend and mentor and he will be greatly missed.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam gaelach."

Deeply Saddened

Fellow Mournes Councillor, Cllr Glyn Hanna also paid tribute "I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of Mournes councillor Sean Doran. Sean worked hard for the people of the Mournes, and many times Sean and I set aside our differences on constitutional issues, for the greater good of getting things done for the ordinary people. I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Sean’s immediate family and wider family circle. Rest easy Sean."

A Pleasure to Work alongside

Mournes Councillor, Cllr Laura Devlin added "I’m So terribly sorry to hear of the death of my Mourne’s Councillor Colleague Sean Doran. Sean was a total gentleman and a pleasure to Work alongside. I am thinking of his family , friends and his party colleague on what is a very sad day for the wider Mourne Area"

Book of Condolence Open

Cllr Mason, Newry, Mourne and Down Council Chairperson has opened an Online Book of Condolence for the residents of Newry, Mourne and Down to extend their sympathies to the family of Councillor Doran.  The Book of Condolence will be available on the Council’s website until Thursday 6 December 2021  at WWW.NEWRYMOURNEDOWN.ORG
