This weekend a sleeping 36-foot giant called Finn will cause quite a racket when he arrives in Warrenpoint. The usually quiet chilled town on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 August will be positively encouraging noise from local residents and tourists to help wake him from his slumber.

This year the man charged with designing and creating the narrative is renowned actor and writer, Dan Gordon, putting his humorous signature and quirky style on this year’s story.

The stories of Finn Mac Cumhaill are woven deep into the history of this region – from his travails on Slieve Gullion, to his battles with rival giants. Each year, the people of Warrenpoint re-enact these epic tales in a collaborative performance.

Giant Finn will travel via the Scenic Carlingford Ferry from Greenore to Greencastle and will move through Warrenpoint town centre as part of a noisy parade on Saturday 18 August at 4pm, as his family ask the public to help them wake him. It's expected to be very busy so visitors are encouraged to be in position for 3.30pm. The Parade will depart from Osbourne Terrace at 4pm, making its way through the town (via Church Street, Dock Street and Havelock Place).  Led by the Point Man, the Parade is an opportunity for everyone to make as much noise as possible to try to ‘Wake The Giant’.  The Point Man needs your help along the route. Shout, scream, stamp your feet and roar! Aided and abetted by colourful characters along the way, the Point Man will make one last ditch attempt to get the crowds to jolt poor Finn awake, before the parade finishes at Havelock Place. Finn will then be taken to Clonallon Park to prepare for an epic showdown the next day.

This giant will take some waking, especially after dozing for a year! -Jasmine Kelly and Newry, Mourne and Down Chairman, Mark Murnin have gathered together some musical instruments to hopefully wake even the sleepiest of giants.

Next day Sunday 19 August at 2pm and 4.30pm in Clonallon Park, his family will host an epic gathering, open to all families and ages, in hope they can finally stir him.

Wake the Giant is a two-day festival of superb entertainment and performance for all the family. From music, arts and crafts and speciality food stalls.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chair, Councillor Mark Murnin, said: “Wake the Giant is one of our most highly anticipated events within the summer programme. Every year the numbers keep growing and this year we don’t expect that to change. Local businesses and traders across Warrenpoint really embrace this festival and the area has so much to offer visitors. I am really looking forward to seeing our locals Wake the Giant this year and having the creative genius of Dan Brown involved means that families are in for a real treat.”

Wake the Giant is one of five events in the Giant Adventures summer programme, a series of family festivals run by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council to showcase the region’s breath-taking mountains, coastline and mythical stories.
