Stephen Perry who ran the Virtual London Marathon 2020 last year in his home town of Kilkeel.

Following the announcement that London Marathon Events plans to stage the world’s first 100,000-person on Sunday 3 October, Southern Area Hospice are inviting its supporters to be a part of it by running to raise funds in its name.

On Sunday 3 October 50,000 participants will take on the traditional course from London’s Blackheath to The Mall, while another 50,000 people around the globe run the 26.2 miles on the course of their choice, any time from 00:00:00 to 23:59:59 BST, in a virtual event.

Southern Area Hospice have a limited number of places available in this wonderful virtual event and are encouraging anyone who was unsuccessful in the ballot to contact them for a chance of taking part. The registration fee is £20.00 and the Southern Area Hospice ask that you pledge to raise a further £100.00 sponsorship. All finishers will receive a unique medal and runners t-shirt.

James McCaffrey, Fundraising Officer at Southern Area Hospice, said: “Running as a sport, and marathons in particular have been a very popular fundraising event for our Hospice for many years with countless runners taking part in World Major Marathons as well as home events, half marathons, 10k & 5k races. This past year with the pandemic, we have seen the postponement of many running events. The London Marathon is one of the most popular marathons on the planet, and this wonderful virtual event gives runners the chance to be part of the world’s greatest marathon safely from their hometown. As a runner myself, there has been limited options to earn medals and event t-shirts this year so that makes the event even more appealing. We have some runners taking part in the traditional event in London so it might be nice for friends to take part simultaneously from home”.
