This Thursday sees Southern Area Hospice take to the streets of Newry for their Corporate Santa Suit Bucket Collection. The “Newry Santa Fun Run” organised in conjunction with Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade as part of the Annual Christmas Lights Switch on had become an important part of the City’s festive calendar attracting huge business and community support but unfortunately this year the Santa Run will not be able to take place as normal due to Covid-19 restrictions. This is a big loss as the Santa Run would normally raise approximately £5,000 for Southern Area Hospice Services.

However, Southern Area Hospice have come up with a different approach this year. This year’s event is to take the form of a “Corporate Santa Suit Bucket Collection” in a hope to raise those much-needed funds but in a safe and responsible manner. A street collection will take place on Thursday 26 November to decorate Newry in Santa’s and kick off the beginning of Christmas festivities. The event is kindly sponsored this year again by CGDM Construction

Businesses are encouraged to enter one or several ‘Santa’s’ into the collection along with a £50pp donation.  Each Corporate Santa will receive a suit and sash with your business name printed onto it.  The event has proved over the past number of years to be a fun experience which also gives great exposure to businesses.  The event will be run along Hospice social media channels all day, whilst tagging and promoting the businesses involved.

James McCaffrey, Fundraising Officer said “This has been a long and difficult year for many, and we hope to add a bit of fun and excitement to the shopping streets of Newry. We understand that many are working from home and feel an event like this, where some employees come out for an hour slot and collect, may be great for company moral. This event traditionally took place on Hill Street, and although our focus would be still Hill Street, companies can take up the collection outside their own place of work if suitable. Thanks to Caroline and all at CGDM Construction for coming on board again this year with sponsoring event to hopefully prevent the shortfall in loss of funds from this event”

Caroline Grant, Marketing Manager, CGDM Construction said “We are honoured to be sponsoring the Santa Collection event again this year.  It was always such a fun event and for a great cause that touches so many. We hope everyone will support this brilliant event”.

This event formerly ran alongside the Newry Christmas Charity Dinner which plans to be a virtual event this year. Fundraising will be via ‘Go Fund Me’ and there will be an appeal for toys to build the traditional ‘Toy Mountain'. We would urge businesses, who normally bring a toy and take a table, to support again this year as it is needed more than ever.

The Christmas Charity committee are delighted to support once again the Santa Event in aid of The Hospice, which over the years has become such an important part of the fund raising effort, for this most worthy cause.

If you would like to enter one or more Santa to take part in the collection, please contact James via email: or Call 028 3026 7711.
