This Christmas, the staff at Southern Area Hospice, will be going above and beyond to make sure patients in the In-patient Unit in Newry, along with their families, are getting the best possible care throughout the festive period.

Gary O’Hare, head chef at SAHS since 2001, says “Christmas is a very special time in the Hospice, it may be the last Christmas that families will have together, so we try our best to make it special.  It can be quite emotional; I remember one year there was a young mother in over the Christmas period and on Christmas day we set up our day centre room as if it was her home.  Her young kids, partner and family came in for Christmas dinner, she was bed bound so she had to be taken outside and come in through the double doors.  The kids waited to open their presents in front of her and they all had a four-course dinner which we provided, and it was like home from home. I will never forget being able to provide this for her, she was so overwhelmed.”

The catering team are busy preparing for the Christmas season, all their hard work will allow patients, along with their families to enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner.  They make sure to include all the trimmings, and for those who don’t fancy a Christmas dinner – they will make them whatever they want.  There will also be home-made Christmas cake and mince pies on hand through the Christmas holidays, as well as Christmas dinner for other staff who are also working over the holidays.

Clara Orr, Staff Nurse in the inpatient unit in Newry will be working on Christmas Day.

“I enjoy working Christmas day in the hospice, it feels good to help those who need it the most.  I try to keep spirits high all year round but at Christmas time it is nice to have the time to talk to the patients.  As always, our main aim is to make sure the patient is comfortable and has everything they need.”

Clara is part of a multi-disciplinary team at Southern Area Hospice consisting of doctors, nurses, nursing auxiliaries, chaplains, and social workers, all working to provide the best possible care to patients and their families this Christmas.

Paula O’Hare’s husband, Brendan was in Hospice throughout December and over the Christmas period.  Paula shared, “The staff ensured Hannah’s memories of visiting her daddy were always positive ones, from helping me organise and celebrate Hannah’s 5th birthday party in Brendan’s bedroom on Christmas Eve, to always warmly welcomingly her by name, Hannah still often talks so fondly of her special Hospice friends who gave her the best ice cream.  I remember the Christmas carols being sung in the corridors that Christmas Eve and then later the chaplain called to see us and gave Brendan and me a special blessing, I think she sensed that we needed her.  Whilst the world outside our window was so busy that night with Christmas preparations, our whole world was in that bedroom, she gave us both such support and a sense of much needed inner peace. With the precious help from nursing staff we made sure Santa was also able to visit the Hospice so Hannah was able to open her presents on Christmas morning with her daddy.  We enjoyed our last family Christmas together in that room and despite the pain and sadness of the cruel reality of our situation, the amazing Hospice staff ensured we experienced a very special day, welcoming our family members as they visited and even allowing Hannah to make and freeze her ice-lollies from her new ‘Mr Frostie’ toy.”

Southern Area Hospice Inpatient Unit in Newry provide 365 day – 24-hour palliative and end of life care for patients in the Southern Trust Area.  Those staff working over Christmas and the New year consider it a privilege to be able to help patients and their families at a very difficult time.
