A murder investigation has commenced following the death last night of 73 year old Bessbrook man Eugene Carr after he was attacked in his home in August.

Mr Carr died in the Royal Victoria hospital shortly before 8pm last night.

Senior Investigating Officer Chief Inspector Lee McNevison said; "This elderly and vulnerable man was victim to horrendous attack whilst he was in his bed at his home in Clogharevan Park in Bessbrook during the early hours of Monday 31 August.

“A post mortem will be carried out in due course however we believe at this stage that he died from the injuries he received following the violent aggravated burglary.” 

Newry, Mourne and Down District Commander, Superintendent Simon Walls said: “We would like to extend our sympathy to the Carr family and thank the wider community for their support during our investigation to date. Enquiries are very much ongoing and we are asking witnesses or anyone who believes they can assist in the investigation in any way to contact detectives at Ardmore on the non-emergency number 101.”

 Two people that were arrested in September in relation to this attack were later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Councillor Roisin Mulgrew has expressed her sadness following Mr Carr's death and said "There is deep shock within the local Bessbrook community at the news of the death of Eugene.

"This has been a very difficult time for the Carr family and the entire community continue to hold them in our thoughts and prayers.

"The attack on Eugene during a burglary in his home is a live police investigation. I would urge anyone with information that can help bring those responsible for this horrific crime to justice to contact the PSNI."
