Several local people have been acknowledged in the 2021 New Year Honours list.

Rathfriland man, Brian McConville, Owner and Chair of the Newry based MJM Group has been awarded an CBE for services to the economy and to charity in Northern Ireland. MJM was founded in Rathfriland as a family joinery business in 1983 with just 6 staff and now is a worldwide marine outfitter employing 270 staff.

John Dalzell has been awarded an OBE for fundraising for the Southern Area Hospice.  Mr Dalzell, 79, thought when he started out that it was just for a year but he kept at it and 29 years later he has raised around £1.7M for the Hospice in Newry. This month First and Deputy First Ministers Arlene Foster and Michele O'Neill visited him in Marcus Square to thank him for his work.

Jerome Mullen has been awarded an OBE  for services to the economy in Northern Ireland and to Polish-Northern Irish relations. Jerome is Honorary Consul of Poland in NI and Director of Newry Chamber of Commerce and The Clanrye Group.

Alan Black has also been awarded an MBE for services to the community in South Armagh. Mr Black was the only survivor of the Kingsmills shootings in 1976 and has long campaigned to uncover the truth surrounding the massacre.
