A Supervalu Facebook post spoke of their loss "It was with great shock and sadness that we all learned of Mick Downey’s passing on Thursday evening. As a person Mick was popular, friendly, always up for a bit of craic, always first with a one liner, he seemed to know everyone and they all seemed to know him. There were no airs or graces with him, what you saw was what you got.

"As a businessman he was fearless, a driving force, with his brother David, behind 2 very successful supermarkets and 2 very successful bars. He had a personal touch when in and around any of the businesses, always making time for his customers and staff and having a yarn.

"He was well respected by his peers and competitors alike. He fought hard for Hill Street, not just for the SuperValu store that he was so proud of, but for all the businesses around it. Mick was a giant of local retail and will be sorely missed.

"The management and staff of Bank Bar & Restaurant , Cobbles Bar, SuperValu Hill Street & SuperValu Dublin road wish to convey their deepest condolences to Hannah, Joanne, Gerard, Michael Jr, Sean, Moninna, David and the entire family circle. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time."

The four businesses will be closed on Monday as a mark of respect. pass on our sincere condolences to the entire Downey family circle.
