Data compiled by IT support experts ramsac, reveals that Northern Ireland has the lowest percentage of internet users in the UK with Newry, Mourne and Down the third highest of the 11 local council districts at 90.4%.

Only 88% of the population of Northern Ireland have used the internet in the past three months, the least out of all regions in the UK. The east of Northern Ireland represented the areas with the most internet users. Antrim and Newtonabbey has the highest proportion of internet users, with 94.5% of its population frequently accessing the internet. This was followed by Ards and North Down, and Newry, Mourne and Down, where 91% and 90.4% respectively use the internet often. Belfast was in fourth place in the rankings.

Unsurprisingly, more rural areas had less internet usage. Mid Ulster represents the lowest internet uptake in Northern Ireland, with 81.9%, and the fourth lowest in the UK, beating only Luton, Dumfries & Galloway and Powys.

Looking at the gender of internet users across the UK, women were the dominant users of the internet, with 24,758,000 users, compared to 24,283,000 men. However, when broken down by age group, 25 – 34 year old men used the internet the most, with 4,479,000 users. 45 – 54 year old women took second place, with 4,453,000 users. Both men and women aged 75+ used the internet the least, and a combined 2,108,000 men and women in the age group said they had never used the internet.
