A house has been destroyed and three others damaged in a fire at Camlough Park, Bessbrook around lunch time today, 27 June. A resident and a Firefighter were taken to hospital.

NIFRS crews from Newry, Warrenpoint, Newtownhamilton and Portadown attended the fire and although the fire was quickly brought under control it was too late to prevent the property being destroyed and other properties receiving heat and smoke damage.

A NIFRS spokesperson said "The fire spread rapidly from the rear of terraced properties at Camlough Park, Bessbrook due to two oil tanks rupturing. Other hazards included several gas cylinders involved in the fire exploding."

The spokesperson added "One resident was feeling unwell and taken to Daisy Hill, Hospital for a check-up and one Firefighter also was sent to hospital as a precaution."

Slieve Gullion Councillor, Cllr Declan Murphy said “We as a community are shocked to learn that a home has been destroyed and three others damaged by fire in Camlough Park near Bessbrook. The area is a close knit community and we will do all we can to help those impacted by this terrible incident. We thank the Fire and Emergency  Services for their prompt actions and we hope that those admitted to hospital will make a full recovery”.MP Mickey Brady praised the Fire and Rescue Service for their handling of the major incident. "I commend the efforts of the Fire and Rescue Service who were involved in dealing with a major incident after an oil tank fire in Camlough Park in Bessbrook."

The Newry and Armagh representative added "The actions of the firefighters involved no doubt saved lives and prevented further damage."
