South Down MP Chris Hazzard has expressed condolences following incidents at the weekend in Carlingford which saw three people lose their lives.

Two men died in a road traffic collision outside Carlingford in the early hours of Monday morning and the body of a woman was found on Monday. Ruth Maguire had been reported missing in Carlingford at the weekend. 

Mr Hazzard said:

“The wider South Down community is deeply saddened at the news that two young men have lost their lives on our roads; and a young mother has passed away in an accident in Carlingford.

“I would like to offer my deepest condolences to their families and friends at this tragic time.

“The thoughts of everyone in South Down and much further afield are with all families who lost loved ones in what was a sad and difficult weekend for the whole community.”

Cllr Antóin Watters, Louth County Council speaking about the tragedy said "This is a very sad day in Carlingford and the Cooley Peninsula with three young people loosing their lives overnight.

"I want to commend the efforts of the emergency teams and local people who assisted in both cases

"Unfortunately the outcome has been tragic in both these cases. I want to offer my sincere sympathy to all of the families involved on this very sad day."
