The Southern Health and Social Care Trust’s have held their ninth Excellence Awards. The awards celebrate and recognise the commitment, innovation and achievements of staff and volunteers.

Dr Kathryn Boyd, Consultant Haematologist scooped the Overall Winner for the Trust’s Excellence Awards and she also took top place for the ‘People’s Choice - Award for Outstanding Care and Compassion’.

The People’s Choice Award is for Trust employees who have demonstrated putting the health and social care needs and safety of patient’s first, exceptional care to a patient, client or relative - this may be kindness, professional expertise or expert care which has made a difference in their life.  They might be a nurse, doctor, receptionist, domestic, therapist, porter, member of catering staff, secretary or someone else.

Dr Boyd was nominated by a member of the public who felt she deserved this award for her outstanding care and commitment.  The nominator commented: “Dr Boyd always showed compassion, humanity, tenderness and sensitivity during what was a very difficult time in our lives.”

Overall Runner up for the annual awards was Kate Kelly, Infection Control and Prevention Nurse and she also secured the Winners Award for ‘Better Together - Award for Team of the Year - Behind the Scenes’.

There were seven award categories including Taking the lead; Better Together Frontline; Better Together Behind the Scenes; Learning in Action; Quality Care – For you, With you; Innovation in Action and People’s Choice Award.

Shane Devlin, Southern Trust Chief Executive said: “It always gives me great pleasure to attend the Excellence Awards and to meet the outstanding individuals and teams who make up the Southern Trust.  In the current climate, where staff are working exceptionally hard to meet the demand, it is fabulous to see the innovative ways in which our staff strive to deliver great care.  Today also allows me to say thank you to all staff, not just the finalist of our awards.  Every day of the year each and every member of the Southern Trust team show huge dedication to the population that we all serve and I pay tribute to them all.”

Special guest at the ceremony was Andrea Begley, Winner of the Voice UK.  Andrea gave an inspiring talk about her journey about being registered blind from a young age and her experience as a frequent user of health and social care services and she paid tribute to all health and social care staff.  The audience gave Andrea a standing ovation following her amazing performances including Angel and Songbird.

Speaking at the event, Geraldine Donaghy, Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Excellence Awards Committee said:  “I am delighted that the Excellence Awards continues to grow each year and to highlight the outstanding measures that our staff and volunteers go to in order to make a difference to the patients and clients living in the Southern area. We have been extremely impressed by the quality of the nominations received. We have extraordinary staff doing exceptional things every day. Our staff consistently go above and beyond to provide excellent care to patients. This shone through in the nomination forms. It is inspiring and humbling to hear such wonderful stories, and so on behalf of the Trust I thank you all for your extraordinary work.”

The role of Master of Ceremonies was held by Simon Gibson, Assistant Director Medical Directorate.
