From today, 8 February a fine of €100 can be issued by Garda on the border if they believe that cross border travel taking place is non essential. It's part of the latest pandemic measures introduced in the Republic to try and contain the spread of Covid-19.

A Garda statement explains "Anyone not ordinarily resident in this State engaging in travel in this jurisdiction without a reasonable excuse may be liable to receive a fine of €100." Although they will continue to use what they call the 4E's - engage, explain, encourage and as a last resort, enforce!
Every adult present who Garda believe to be in breach of the regulation can be issued with the €100 fine.
South of the border under current travel advice there is an inter-county ban for residents, who must not travel beyond 5km of their home unless the travel is deemed essential.
