Newry, Mourne and Down Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) has been recognised for their efforts in educating residents on road safety, winning the Public Sector Award at the recent Road Safe NI Road Safety 2021 Awards.

This followed notable successes throughout the year such as the implementation of seven new Speed Indicator Devices across the Council area, bringing the total number of Speed Indicator Devices provided by the PCSP in Newry, Mourne and Down to 14.

Newry, Mourne and Down PCSP has also held ‘Kids’ Court’ road safety projects in schools in Kilkeel and Newtownhamilton and have provided many community groups and families across the district with hi-vis vests and armbands, to keep people safe and visible to road users while out walking in the dark mornings and evenings. It was for these reasons that they were nominated for the Road Safe NI Public Sector award by PSNI Newry, Mourne and Down.

Newry, Mourne and Down PCSP Chair Councillor Alan Lewis said, “We as a PCSP are very proud to receive this Public Sector Award for Road Safety. We would like to thank PSNI Newry, Mourne and Down for nominating us for the award, and we would also like to thank Road Safe NI for selecting Newry, Mourne and Down PCSP to receive the award.”

Councillor Lewis continued, “For us, road safety is an important issue which we will continue to work on. Initiatives such as our Speed Indicator Devices and Kids’ Court programmes are proving effective in reducing speeding on our roads, and we are keen to build on this success by providing further road safety projects in Newry, Mourne and Down in the new year.”

The ‘NI Road Safety Awards’, now in their seventh year, are organised by the charity Road Safe in partnership with CRASH Services and were presented at Cultra Manor, Holywood. For further information on road safety initiatives provided by PCSP across Newry, Mourne and Down please contact the PCSP Office by e-mail at pcsp@nmandd.org
