Dawn Keenan was the February Recycler of the Month competition.

The competition, which is sponsored by “Around a Pound” in partnership with Newry and Mourne District Council, awards a £50 voucher to householders who use their recycling bins correctly.

Dawn Keenan the winner with Tara Cunningham, Newry and Mourne District Council.

Dawn takes great pride in using her blue bin to its full recycling potential. It contained all the correct recyclable material including plastic pots, tubs and trays, newspapers, cardboard, glass bottles and cans.

Dawn said, ‘I have always tried to recycle as much as possible and if I am ever unsure, I log onto the Councils website to double check what materials I can put into the blue bin. I work in St Michaels Primary School, Newtownhamilton here we educate the children daily on recycling, they see the value in it and it’s important for me to practice what I preach.”

Tara Cunningham, recycling officer checked 20 bins at random in the area and noted that most residents were using their blue bins correctly. However she did notice that some bins weren’t being used to their full potential.

Tara said, “Almost ½ of the waste we produce at home can be recycled in the blue bin. It is important to have a system inside the home, which makes it easy to separate waste effectively. “We” as a District are unfortunately landfilling over 10,000t of potentially recyclable waste every year. This is costing us a fortune both economically and environmentally. I would encourage everyone to take their lead from Dawn and try to recycle more.”
