Newry City Councillor, Cllr Michael Savage has condemned recent deliberate damage at a children’s play park at Loanda Crescent in Newry which left a table and the soft surface of the new playpark fire damaged.

Damage caused to the Loanda play park

Cllr Savage and his Newry SDLP colleagues were contacted by parents and local residents expressing their disgust at the incident.

The Newry City representative said “It appears a fire has been intentionally ignited on the table of the bench which has not only deemed the bench unusable but has also damaged the soft play surface underneath.

“The SDLP fought hard for this state-of-the-art play facility for local children and the recent spell of good weather has seen it being utilised even more than before by children and families alike.”

Cllr Savage added “Arsonists have no regard for their community and are only hurting their own neighbours, family and friends.”

“I have been in contact with our council this morning regarding this incident and I encourage anyone with information about those responsible to contact the Police, I also urge local residents to remain vigilant and report any similar behaviour to Police immediately”.
