The Northern Ireland Executive through the Department of Social Development has provided funding to assist with the development of Newry City Centre.A new brand identity "Hello Newry" hopes to help promote all that Newry City has to offer and especially enhance the attraction to visitors and locals alike of the recently named Creamery and Cathedral Quarters within.

Newry & Mourne District Council and Newry City Centre Management officially launched the new 'brand' today as part of the £300,000 Newry Revitalisation Project.

‘Hello Newry’ focusses on Newry’s reputation as being a welcoming city to visit. The brand itself has a series of bright vibrant colours which will represent different sectors, these running through an ‘N’ (reflecting the heart of the city) like the two waterways- the Clanrye River and the Newry Canal.

A follow on to the Environmental Improvement Scheme on Hill Street and Monaghan Street which saw a new streetscape installed in 2012 this project incorporates branding, marketing and a shop frontage improvement and painting scheme.  The exciting new marketing and revitalisation campaign aims to bring a fresh new look and atmosphere to Newry’s Cathedral and Creamery Quarters (incorporating Hill Street and Monaghan Street). The project will see a new website launching in August with exclusive branding, photography and street signage in the two areas. With the new identity Newry’s Cathedral and Creamery Quarters are gearing up to firmly establish the area as one of Northern Ireland’s leading city centre spaces.

More than 100 businesses on both the Cathedral and Creamery Quarters have recently had shop front makeovers in time for a number of exciting events taking place in the coming months with highlights including Newry Film Festival, the 50th Anniversary Concert for Newry Credit Union and a unique Ocktober Fest. The Northern Ireland Executive, through the Department for Social Development, have funded the scheme; which will be rolling out throughout the Cathedral and Creamery Quarters in the coming months and hopes to attract more tourists, visitors and shoppers to the area.

Cllr Mickey Ruane, Mayor of Newry & Mourne DC expressed his excitement surrounding the project saying: “Since the inception of the Newry City Centre Master Plan in 2010 the city centre has strived to realise its true potential; a social centre for Newry residents and for our many visitors to eat, drink, shop and discover more about the city around them. We have a fantastic selection of independent retailers, coffee shops, boutiques, high street names and restaurants in our Creamery and Cathedral Quarters, all of which we want to shout about and this campaign is the perfect platform to do so.”

 A spokesperson from the Department of Social Development added: “The Northern Ireland Executive through the Department of Social Development has provided funding to assist with the development of Newry City Centre. This investment in marketing, events and improvements on Hill Street, Monaghan Street and the wider Cathedral/Creamery Quarters is aimed at providing the retailers and residents of Newry with the tools necessary for promoting Newry as a must visit destination right across the region.”

Eddy Curtis, Director of Administration, Newry & Mourne DC also said: “This campaign compliments the Newry way of life and we hope that this welcoming brand will become synonymous with Newry City Centre. There is already a fantastic buzz around the Cathedral and Creamery Quarters following the initial stages of the revitalisation plan and this next stage aims to build on this momentum.”

The new brand for the Cathedral and Creamery Quarters will be introduced in the coming weeks to the streets of Newry and online, with an exciting new website dedicated to the City Centre, ‘Newry.com’. This website aims to inform residents and visitors of Newry’s local shops, where to eat and drink, what to do and where to park. Branded cotton shopping bags will also be available in a number of outlets on Hill Street and Monaghan Street in the coming weeks.
