Reports of scam victimisation has risen across the district where criminals attempt and encourage people to part with their cash or personal information. The scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, varied, and much harder to detect.

To combat this Newry, Mourne and Down Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) is launching ‘Scambassador’ online awareness sessions on Wednesday 24 March and Thursday 25 of March 2021. By attending one of the online training sessions, participants will have the opportunity to hear about the latest scam information from a representative from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and also guest speakers from the Banking industry and Trading Standards. Participants of the sessions will also gain knowledge and tools to protect themselves from scams and will then become a ‘Scambassador’ meaning they can pass scam prevention information on to vulnerable members of the community. PCSP hope that this will help decrease the levels of scam victimisation across our local communities in Newry, Mourne and Down.

Newry, Mourne and Down PCSP Chairperson, Councillor John Trainor stated, “I would like to encourage people to take part in the Scambassador training, as it will give people the skills and knowledge on the latest techniques that scammers are using. Those who attend the training will then be able to share the information gained with their family, friends and local communities, which will help information reach the wider Newry, Mourne and Down area and protect our local people from these types of crimes.”

One of the best ways to tackle scams is to understand how scammers commit their crimes and to know signs to look for which may indicate a scam is taking place. It is important to remember anyone can find themselves the victim of a scam. If you suspect you may have been scammed or involved in fraudulent activity, please report this via 101 or contact Action Fraud UK.
