To date Newry, Mourne and Down Council have granted a total of 24 Pavement Café Licences throughout the district.

A Pavement Café Licence allows a business to place furniture such as tables and chairs on a public area for use by customers.  Cafes, restaurants, pubs, retail outlets providing refreshments, takeaways, supermarkets with a deli counter etc can all apply.

The vast majority are in operation in Newcastle with 10 premises permitted to use the area outside their business for customers.

Newry City has been late to the party with applications locally only recently being made. At present there are 13 applications pending with 6 of them Newry based, 4 in Warrenpoint, 2 in Newcastle and 1 in Warrenpoint.

Newry premises presently seeking a licence are Café Krem; Friar Tucks, Sugar Island; Friar Tucks, Monaghan Street; Snaubs; The Velveteen Rabbit and Café 35.

12 incomplete applications have also been received.
