Speaking after attending the event to mark the Day Newry and Armagh Sinn Fein MLA Megan Fearon said that members of the transgender community should be free to live their lives free from intimidation and harassment.

"I was proud to attend this morning's event in Newry to mark Transgender Day of Remembrance and to stand in solidarity with the Trans community.

"Members of the trans community make a positive contribution to the cultural diversity in our society and that should celebrated. Unfortunately, however, the trans community still experiences intolerance, discrimination, and on occasions, physical attacks.

"Last year 31 crimes against members of the trans community were reported to the PSNI. That is totally unacceptable. We are working every day to create a society where everyone, regardless of their gender identity, feels safe and is treated with equality."

SAIL is a support organisation for the families of Trans individuals of any age who need help, support or advice in Northern Ireland.

If you are in need of support they will endeavour to meet that need and will not be bound by geography or funding.

If you or a member of your family are travelling the path of gender variance you may feel alone. SAIL can offer you Support, Acceptance & Information so that those around you can Learn and walk with you.
