Detectives in Newry are investigating an aggravated burglary last night, 3 September which saw the female occupants on a house confronted with men armed with knives or screwdrivers escaping with a handbag and gold necklace.

A report was made to police shortly after 11:20pm that the female occupant of a house on Church Street was alerted to a noise downstairs. When she went to investigate she was confronted by a masked man armed with a knife or screwdriver. The man threatened the woman who then took her handbag containing cash.

Two other men, also armed with knives or screwdrivers, were also found to be in the house. After snatching a gold necklace from another woman in the house, the three men subsequently fled, making off in the direction of High Street.

Detective Sergeant Foley said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the victims who have been left very distressed. I want to appeal to anyone who was in Church Street and saw three men acting suspiciously, or anyone who knows anything about this crime, to contact us on 101, and quote reference 2216 of 03/08/20.”
