Newry 2’s 6-1 Mossley 4’s

Newry 2’s have started this season in blistering form racking up 14 goals in their last two games. The home side carried this form into the game and were quickly one up with David Hogg scoring early in the first quarter. Mossley were struggling to cope with Newry’s counter attacks and it was soon two with Simon McCafferty scoring after good build up play from Andrews and Hogg. Mossley created a few chances but Newry keeper Andrew Marks did well when called into action. Josh Porter got Newry’s third in the first quarter and it was all looking rather easy.

Stephen Graham got a quick fire brace as the striker notched up his first goals of the season in the third quarter and David Andrews after working tirelessly midfield was reward with a goal soon after to make it six. Mossley did manage to get one back in the fourth quarter but it was only a consolation goal. Unfortunately the visitors frustration boiled over near the end as they received a red card for unsavoury incident as a Mossley player lashed out at Newry playmaker David Hogg.

Newry 1’s 3-1 North Down 1’s

Newry hosted North Down in their second league game of the season on Saturday and notched up their second win with a hard fought 3-1 victory.

Newry started brightly and were pressing North Down high up the pitch and were able to win the ball back on a number of occasions and force chance but were unable to get on the score board. It was North who struck first blood as they went ahead near the end of the first quarter against the run of play. Colin McKnight got Newry back on level terms when he burst into the circle and fired home a brilliant reverse stick shot into the bottom corner. The visitors could have went back into the lead were it not for the post and Sam Megaw who coolly took the ball off the line just before the break.

In the third quarter the home side were getting more joy on the attack and John Taylor got their second with a low drag flick from a short corner. He could have had his second just a matter of minutes later when he won the ball high up the pitch and drove into the second, however his shot went narrowly wide. He did however get his second in the fourth quarter again from another short corner to give Newry a two goal cushion. Taylor was again in the middle of it with five minutes left as he was first to react to a cross from the right, but again his shot just went wide. North pushed forward and did force a number of short corners but Newry held out to come away with the 3-1 victory.
