Newry 1’s 3-2 Queens 1’s (Kirk Cup)

Newry Hosted Queens on Saturday in their opening match of the Kirk Cup hot on the heals of their recent 1-0 loss to Queens last week in the league.

Queens as expected started off strongly with a lot of possession, Newry were restricted to a few counter attacks. Both sides were unable to come up with any chances of note with the Newry defence holding out.

Newry came into the game as the match wore on and started strongly in the second half. They made this count with John Taylor getting his first of the day from a well worked short corner. However the lead was short lived as Newry were down to ten men, Queens scored from their own short to level the scores, and heaped further pain on the home side making the numerical advantage pay off as they went one up just on the whistle at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Newry knew they had work to do and flew out of the traps in the 4th, pressing further up the pitch and causing a lot of problems for Queens. Colin Holmes stepped up mid way through to fire home a short corner of his own to level the scores again. Newry still had the bit between their teeth and with 3 minutes remaining they took the lead again with Taylor getting his second of the day. To seal the win for Newry.

Team: R. McGivern, C. Henning, C. Holmes, M. Russell, A. Baird, J. Greer, J. Taylor, I. Steen, N. Davenport, K. McWilliams, K. Fletcher, P. McKnight, J. Gregg, S. McCafferty

Kilkeel 0-2 Newry 2’s

Newry travelled to Kilkeel on a bitterly cold and blustery Friday night in a tough game against the local rivals and the elements. The visitors started the brighter of the two teams, with early chances falling to David Hogg and Simon McCafferty. Hogg opened the scoring with a rocket from a short corner.

Richard Henning in the Newry goals was in fine form keeping out any chances Kilkeel created. Stephen Graham open his account for the season when he was found free at the back post for a- simple tap in in the second half which gave Newry all three points.

Team: R. Henning, I. Lutton, N. Lutton, J. Lutton, G. Moffett, S. Graham, S. Moffett, S. McCafferty, A. Irwin, D. Barlow, C. Large, D. Hogg, J. Gregg, M. McCullough, J. Whiteside

Newry Ladies 0-5 Larne Ladies

On Saturday 27 November Newry ladies played Larne Ladies at home.  With Larne sitting third on the league table, Newry knew they were in for a tough match. From the whistle Larne pressed forward with quick passing among their mid field and forwards, making Newry defence work hard. It wasn’t long before Larne won a penalty corner of which secured them their first goal of the match.

Into the second quarter Newry ladies kept their heads high and even though Larne were still driving forward with the ball, the defending was really strong from the Newry defence. With great hit outs from sweeper Chrissie McAuley through to the mid field and forwards, Newry had a couple of chances but were unable to equalise. Larne won another penalty corner but with a fantastic reverse stop by Chrissie on the right post, the ball was well cleared.

Not long into the third quarter, Rachael Greer won a penalty corner for Newry which was a straight shot on goal by Chrissie but the ball was deflected off a Larne defenders stick. Newry worked hard to drive forward with the ball but were constantly pressured by Larne players. Unfortunately, Larne scored again from a penalty corner as the ball was deflected off keeper Katie McCullough’s pads into the back of the net.

With only minutes into the final quarter, Larne broke with the ball and managed to secure their final goal of the match. Newry continued to play really good hockey and worked well to clear the ball from the circle preventing any more goals from Larne.

Even though Newry ladies were beat 5-0, they played some great hockey and gave Larne a good game.

The match ball was kindly sponsored by Joanne McKelvey Hair & Beauty Banbridge.

Newry ladies play Banbridge Ladies 2XI in the Intermediate Cup on Saturday 4th December.

Team: Kathry Baird (captain), Laverne Inns, Rachael Greer, Katie McCullough, Chrissie McAuley, Stacey Moffett, Sarah McNeilly, Abbey Haire, Stephanie Smart, Rebecca Murdock, Zara Moffett, Lisa Murdock, Sara Adams, Jodie Freeman
